ROYAL MAIL

The Royal Mail was founded in 1516 and is the postal service of the United Kingdom. Britain was the first country to supply prepaid postage stamps and they still remain the only stamps in the world without the name of the country that issues them. By the late 1800 hundreds there were up to twelve deliveries each day. Until fairly recently there were two mail deliveries a day. This no longer applies, but a First Class mail item is usually delivered by the next business day almost anywhere in the United Kingdom. Deliveries occur every day except Sundays and Bank Holidays. Although not as efficient as in the past, the United Kingdom are justly proud of the Royal Mail service. For most of its history, the Royal Mail was a government owned and operated. In 2011 it was converted in to a public liability company which is quoted on the London Stock Exchange. The British Government still owns a large stake in the company. Like most mail services the Royal Mail delivers and collects mail. Customers deposit their mail items in red pillar or wall boxes located throughout the United Kingdom. The mail is collected at set times from these red pillar or wall boxes. These red pillar or wall boxes are famous and are also found throughout countries that form the British Commonwealth. In these former colonies the local post office authorities have often adopted the same system and collect mail from these red pillar or wall boxes.    Larger Royal Mail customers can also arrange for their bulk mail items to be collected at their offices. Customers can also go directly to post offices to buy stamps, hand over mail items or to register their parcels or letters. Some small shops, usually tobacconists, also sell stamps and in smaller villages these small shops double-up as local post offices. The Roual Mail, like all postal services competes with other logistic companies such as Aerospeed couriers.
