Over the years as the volume of letter, documents parcels and packages carried by courier companies has become larger and larger. As the volume and speed of delivery has increased it became necessary to provide customers with an idea of where their parcel was in the delivery cycle. A USPS tracking number answered this need by allowing USPS to give customers accurate information of the location of a package at any particular time on its journey to delivery. It was largely with the advent of sophisticated information technology that tracking and more particularly USPS tracking became possible. Most large courier companies also use similar tracking numbers. USPS tracking numbers are given at the point of entry of the letter, document or package at the UPS hub. A USPS tracking number used for domestic packages in the USA, usually has the prefix ‘IZ’ which is then followed by a six character shipper number. The six character shipper number is made up of numbers and letters. After the IZ and shipper number another couple of numbers follow to alert the shipper to the mode of transport e.g. for ground transport the number would be 03, while for United States next day air for early Saturday morning delivery this number would be 41. In total USPS tracking uses 22 such codes giving the shipper an idea of the mode and shipping requirements. The USPS tracking number does not end with these two numbers. To complete the USPS tracking number requires a further 8 digits. Thus the USPS shipping number has a total of 18 characters. Customers have been offered a range of services that have improved USPS tracking. A USPS customer can receive text messages to their mobile phones. They can also send a text message informing the service where they will be for delivery if they won’t be at home for a particular delivery.
